Gene Name Synonym | FNDC5, FRCP2, irisin, Irisin, fibronectin type III domain containing 5 |
Fibronectin type III domain-containing protein 5, the precursor of irisin, is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein that is encoded by the FNDC5 gene. Irisin is a cleaved version of FNDC5, named after the Greek messenger goddess Iris. Fibronectin domain-containing protein 5 is a membrane protein comprising a short cytoplasmic domain, a transmembrane segment, and an ectodomain consisting of a ~100 kDa fibronectin type III (FNIII) domain.Irisin, which was recently identified as a myokine and an adipokine, transforms white adipose tissue to brown adipose tissue.Irisin can potentially prevent obesity and associated type 2 diabetes by stimulating expression of WAT browning-specific genes via the p38 MAPK and ERK pathways. In addition to the proposed effects of irisin on adipose tissue, bone, and brain described in more detail below, irisin had anti-inflammatory and antimetastatic effects, improved glucose uptake in muscle cells, facilitated endothelial cell proliferation, lowered blood pressure, and improved cardiac hypertrophy. |
Recombinant Human FNDC5 Protein was determined by SDS-PAGE with Coomassie Blue. | Active recombinant FNDC5 upregulated both UCP1 expression and white to brown fat conversion in mature 3T3-L1 adipocytes ( Immunofluorescence and Bodipy staining, Blue: DAPI; Green: Bodipy stain for Lipids; Red: Brown adipose tissue marker UCP1,cat: GB112174). |
